Currents is the sound of Kevin Parker alone in his Fremantle beach house, breaking up with his old band, his old sound, and maybe himself, then rebuilding everything from glitter and tears. After the guitar-hero cosmos of Lonerism, Parker sold most of his pedals, bought a Rainbow Machine and a Juno-106, and made a 51-minute soft-disco heartbreak album that somehow became the biggest psychedelic record of the decade. Every instrument except a few guest drum fills is him: drums, bass, every synth layer, every falsetto harmony, every backwards vocal sigh. The result is immaculate, lonely, and impossibly danceable.
