In the summer of 2000, four shy University College London students released a debut so fragile, honest, and quietly devastating that it accidentally became one of the biggest British records of the new millennium. Parachutes is 42 minutes of wide-eyed wonder and heartbreak played at bedroom volume. Chris Martin�s voice�still boyish, still cracking on the high notes�floats over Jonny Buckland�s crystalline, Edge-influenced guitar lines, Guy Berryman�s understated bass, and Will Champion�s gentle, almost jazz-trained drums. Producer Ken Nelson recorded it in tiny studios in Liverpool and Wales with almost no overdubs, capturing the sound of four friends who still couldn�t believe they were allowed to make music for a living.
