Aeroplane is not an album. It is a 40-minute nervous breakdown set to singing saws, bagpipes, and a voice that sounds like it�s being ripped out of Jeff Mangum�s chest one syllable at a time. Written in the wake of Mangum obsessively re-reading The Diary of Anne Frank until he believed he was in love with her reincarnated ghost, the record is a fever dream about sex, death, World War II, Jesus, two-headed boys, and the end of everything. Recorded on 4-track and 8-track in Robert Schneider�s Denver house (and sometimes in friends� bedrooms), it sounds like a marching band falling down the stairs inside a burning synagogue while a Greek chorus chants about semen-stained mountaintops.
