Debut is a glorious misnomer. By 1993 Bj�rk Gu�mundsd�ttir was already a veteran: child prodigy, punk singer, avant-garde composer with The Sugarcubes. Yet when she stepped out alone, she made something that sounded like the first day of the rest of music. Recorded between London, Reykjav�k, and Los Angeles with Madonna/Tricky producer Nellee Hooper, Debut is a technicolor explosion of house beats, Bollywood strings, jazz horns, harp glissandos, and Bj�rk�s voice�by turns little-girl playful, banshee wild, and heartbreakingly tender. It�s club music that cries, pop music that refuses to stay inside the lines, and one of the most joyful documents of freedom ever pressed to wax.
